Shalamar
In the 80s the name Shalamar became synonymous with one of the most consistently successful black American bands who have notched up 16 UK chart hits since their debut in 1977 with Uptown Festival. All their subsequent hit records attained classic status with dance fans all over the world –amassing over 300 weeks on the R&B charts in America in the process the equivalent of six consecutive years on the chart!

With the release of their 1982 album Friends, Shalamar finally gained the full recognition in the British pop arena. This was the year that signposted their success, when the group were rarely out of the UK charts. The Friends album generated top 10 singles, I can make you feel good hit no. 7 followed by the Shalamar anthem A night to remember and finally Friends, the title track.

The bands live appearances became riotous affairs, tickets being sold as fast as they could be printed and new records being set for encores as the Friends World Tour concluded at Wembley Arena. The Friends album became the best selling album notching up over 600.000 sales in the UK alone.

In 1984 Jeffrey and Jody departed Shalamar to pursue solo careers. Howard stayed on in Shalamar and went on to win a Grammy Award for the hit Don’t get stopped in Beverly Hills. The new 1986 album HEARTBREAK also included the hit single DANCING IN THE SHEETS from the movie Footloose. Howard then left Shalamar to pursue a solo recording career.

In 1997 the Shalamar trio reunited along with LL Cool J for This is for the lover in you and once again enjoyed a top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

1999 saw Howard and Jeffery embark on a reunion world tour billed as Shalamar feat. Howard Hewlett and Jeffrey Daniel, and thus have successfully carried the name Shalamar into the next millennium.
